As districts head into a new school year, we're launching a weekly series spotlighting school nutrition programs that are actively rewriting what a school meal can be. Each installment features a single district — one that received a Healthy Meals Incentives (HMI) grant, and in many cases has gone on to earn an HMI Recognition Award for the work that followed.
What the series covers
Every story focuses on one district and the specific, replicable moves they made: the equipment they bought, the staff they hired or retrained, the recipes they tested, and the feedback systems they built with students and families. These aren't abstract case studies — they're field notes from the kitchens doing the work.
The through-line is USDA's updated school nutrition standards: more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; less added sugar and sodium. Those standards are easier to meet when they're treated as a design brief rather than a compliance checklist. The districts in this series treat them that way.
Why this series, and why now
HMI Recognition Awards honor school districts making significant strides in nutrition — whether through scratch cooking, nutrition education, cultural diversity on the menu, or collaborative engagement with students and families. The pipeline of awardees has grown fast enough that the best playbooks risk being buried. The goal of Cafeteria Chronicles is to pull those playbooks out, one district at a time, so they can travel.

If you're running a program that belongs on this list, the Recognition Awards application is how to raise your hand. The program is open to any School Food Authority participating in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program across the 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
